Beware of Sports Drinks

Be careful with what you allow your child to drink. Sports drinks contain large concentrations of sugar and acids, and they have the erosive potential to dissolve tooth enamel and cause cavities. If you have questions about what types of foods and drinks your child should avoid or would like to make an appointment with our pediatric dentists in Centerville, Utah, call Children’s Dentistry today at 801-295-8322.

To minimize the risk of cavities and other dental problems, children should avoid drinking sports drinks and drink water instead. This applies before, during, and after their game. If you choose to allow your child to drink a sports drink, we encourage you to speak with Dr. Mark Nelson, Dr. Treagan White, and Dr. Adam Hiné about the sports drink before allowing your child to drink it.

If your child does drink a sports beverage, we recommend that you:

  • Reduce the frequency with which they drink it and the amount of time their teeth are in contact with the beverage
  • Teach your child to swallow immediately rather than swishing the liquid in their mouth
  • Alternate sips of water with the sports drink to neutralize the effect of the sports drink
  • Rinse athletic mouthguards with water
  • Find “dental-friendly” sports drinks that are less likely to damage your child’s teeth
